It’s Nice To Be Noticed!

Sunflowers are not wallflowers. I mean, look at her! She faces you and demands attention.

As a writer, it’s difficult to do that. We are, by nature, solitary beings but it’s important to seek recognition. Especially when you’re not on the New York Times Best Sellers list…yet.

The hard part is exposing your work. That can be difficult. Good writing shows a soft, mushy part of your psyche, something you may not want to revisit or have anyone else see.

Writing the Fairies of Carlow series is cathartic for me. I can take all those angsty moments of growing up and put them into the story. Then I get to say what I should have said back then, or done what would have made things better. (Such as, standing up to those bullies, or not taking myself too seriously.)

Sometimes, as I’m writing a scene based on something that really happened to me, I cringe at the memories. Once the story’s finished, I feel better about it, but getting there is a slog through the emotional swamp.

In my new Fairies of Carlow book, based upon Lady Zepherine, I’m taking a look at the bullies who made me miserable during middle school and high school. Oh, it’s hard to look back on those people (both male and female) and remember what I had to endure! But there’s plenty of material! Silver lining? Hopefully!

Pressing on that sensitive nerve ending, Sonja

New Book!

Recently, I posted about an upcoming book in the Guinness the Therapy Dog series. Now that I’m in final edits for that one, I have decided to write a fourth book in my popular Fairies of Carlow series!

A reader (and Ig friend) asked questions about Lady Zepherine, the mentor Gilded Fairy from The Fairies of Carlow: The Gilding.

That got me thinking, and the good lady demanded that her story be told. I am discovering her history and will tell the story of her younger years.

How did she become a Gilded Fairy? Who is she related to (since all Gildeds are royal)? What is her relationship to Fern the Gilded? Why is she Fern the Gilded’s mentor? Did she ask for that role, or was she assigned?

All those questions (and more!) will be answered in the new book. The title is pending!

I hope you will enjoy this new book! Sonja

From time to time I put my ebooks on sale. If you’re in the market for an ebook, check this website for announcements. I don’t have a specific schedule, but I do announce the sales here and on my Instagram (@author_sonja_danielson).

The Fairies of Carlow series is filled with middle grade books. That means chapters, no illustrations, and a more complex plot. These aren’t Young Adult books, so the subject matter should be appropriate for those readers of any age who are advanced enough to handle chapters.

The Voyage and the Guinness the Therapy Dog series are illustrated books. They are meant to be easy-to-read books, suitable for those learning how to read.

The Voyage is based on historical fact. It is set in the 1600s and looks at English history and how a preacher travels through Europe in search of religious freedom.

Guinness is a real therapy dog, and Lucy is his real-life older sister. They live with me. The books are based on Guinness’s adventures and his relationship with Lucy.

I hope you enjoy them. Sonja

Unboxing the books!

One of the most fun things is to get a box of books in the mail. From the covers to the pages, I love getting books.

These days, it takes a long time to get stuff shipped–since the shipping sources have been affected, as well as the supply lines. Order what you want and have the patience to wait. The people working to get it to you are battling a lot of negativity and unhappiness from the scarcity of several things as well.

Make sure you thank your delivery drivers–and wave when they drive by. It’s a good way to bridge the gap of social distancing!

I was out walking Guinness the Therapy Dog and waited for the Fed Ex truck to pass by before we crossed a side street. It wasn’t a big deal for me or Guinness, but it meant a lot to the driver and he called out a thank you. It was nice to show caring in such a simple way.

Tell me your ideas for bridging the social distancing gap! Sonja

It’s Throwback Thursday and I’m looking back at my first book series: The Fairies of Carlow.

These middle-grade books have chapters and are based on a fairy kingdom. They come from Ireland and now are in the United States. With magic, they find their way through their teen years. Not only do they grapple with the angst that accompanies that time, but the Red Caps are causing trouble.

These wicked creatures bring chaos and fear to the kingdom and cause trouble throughout the series.

Each book stands alone, but you get to revisit the characters from previous books and can see what they’ve been up to since their story was told in their book.

One of the benefits of staying home these days is the ability to read more. Ebooks are always available while print books may take a while to ship, depending on where they are coming from and how well the shipping lines are doing to your town.

Personally, I love ebooks and carry my Kindle around in my purse. That way, when I’m stuck in a line I can take out my book instead of standing around getting bored or irritated.

Bonus: all of my books are available as ebooks!!! Just for you! Sonja

Did You Get a Copy?

A couple of weekends ago I offered the ebook versions of these titles for free. So many downloads! I hope you were one of those who took advantage of the offer.

If not, you can order the ebook or the paperback using the direct links in the left margin of this website. You can also find my entire book catalog at Amazon.com. Just search for my name, ‘Sonja Danielson’, and all my titles will come up.

“The Voyage” is a true history of one of the founding families of the American Colonies. I happen to be a member of that family. Doing the research was fun and I learned so much about the patriarch who instigated the family’s move from England and Europe to the American colonies.

He didn’t live long enough to move to Plymouth Colony, but his wife and sons booked passage on a ship and arrived in Boston, along with his father-in-law and sister-in-law. The story of his father-in-law, Stephen Bachiler, is very interesting and I plan to research and write about it.

So many stories float through my head and I want to write them all!

Please leave a review on Amazon.com or Good Reads if you have read one of my books. I would love to see what you think! Sonja

Two of My Favorite Things

(c) 2020

Chickens and garden art.

This one fills both categories quite well!

I love how kooky it is. Some folks don’t like how the eyes follow you as you move about the yard.

The wings flap and there’s a place to put a tea light inside so it will illuminate at night. I haven’t tried it but I wonder how hot the metal will be and if the paint will start to peel off when it is heated.

I think it’s time for an experiment!

Enjoy your garden (and don’t forget to make a lovely place for the fairies!) Sonja
